BINGO FUND RAISER SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 6, 2003 7:00 TO 10:00 KELLYVILLE SCHOOL CAFETERIA EVERYONE WELCOME
The Friends of the Kellyville Public Library, Inc. was organized and incorporated in 1991 for the purpose of establishing a local library. They collected donated books, shelving and equipment and in 1992, the Town Trustees agreed to operate a library in a portion of city hall. Citizens of Kellyville voted to dedicate one-tenth of one percent of the city sales tax for the library operation. A part time librarian, Imogene Watkins, was hired and the Kellyville Public Library Board was formed to oversee operations. The library opened June 1, 1992 for 15 hours per week. There were no computers and most of the books were not cataloged. With lots of help from volunteers, we soon had most of the books cataloged. Imogene applied for all grants that were available. During the first two years the library received grants for a copier, fax machine, our first computer and a $3,000 children's book grant. Later another computer grant was received giving the library two computers. One was connected to the internet but for library use only. The library soon outgrew the available space at city hall. In October 1996, The Friends of Kellyville Public Library made a commitment, with the approval of the Town Trustees, to raise funds to purchase property and build a new library. An application for a 501 (c) 3 tax exempt status was applied for and received. The Friends of the Library had fund raisers and accepted donations until enough funds were raised to purchase and pay for the property. With continued fund raising enough money was raised to make applications to foundations for grants. After receiving numerous grants and raising sufficient funds, construction was begun in December 1999 and the doors of this new 4000 sq. ft. facility at 230 E. Buffalo were opened September 23, 2000. The Friends of the Library donated this new library to the Town of Kellyville free of all debt.
